Description
At the end of the 1960s, Nissan nurtured an ambitious idea: to design a sports car capable of rivaling the elegant European alternatives, but without their exorbitant prices or the irritating tendency of Italian electric cars to conk out at the worst possible moment.
The result arrived in 1969 in the shape of the now legendary Datsun 240Z, a car that radically changed the world’s perception of Japanese sports cars, almost overnight. With its balanced proportions, mechanical robustness and authentic driving pleasure, the Z proved that Japan was no longer content to observe the sports car market from afar. It had arrived with a very clear ambition.
Over the 1970s, the world changed. Emissions regulations tightened, notably in the United States, and buyers demanded more refinement in addition to raw performance. Nissan understood this perfectly. Rather than compromising the spirit of the Z, the brand evolved it.
Launched in 1975, the Datsun 280Z retained all the visual verve and the rear‑wheel drive balance, while gaining maturity, making it one of the best grand tourers of its era.
It was powered by a 2. 8‑litre inline six, now equipped with Bosch fuel injection. The result was a smoother throttle response, improved reliability and optimal comfort on long journeys. The rough edges of the original 240Z had been subtly softened, but above all, its character remained intact.
The car boasted the endless bonnet, the compact boot and the remarkable-balanced S30 chassis which, decades later, still underpins many projects, from historic rally cars to highly developed race builds, and tasteful restomods.
With the Z series, Nissan achieved far more than mere sales. These cars established Japan as a credible maker of proper driver’s cars and quietly forced Europe to take an interest in the brand.
The example presented here wears a superb Sky Blue hue and has clearly benefited from meticulous maintenance and scrupulous servicing throughout its life. Significant overhauls were carried out in 2019 and 2023 by a renowned Z specialist in Germany, ensuring flawless mechanical operation, rock‑solid reliability and an optimal driving experience.
In many respects, this is the ideal Z. Practical, charismatic and with authentic charm, it offers sincere driving pleasure without frills or unnecessary complications.
