Atelier des 1000 is pleased to offer for sale this BMW Z3 M, one of the most striking creations from BMW Motorsport’s programme in the late 1990s, presented in the very elegant Cosmosschwarz Metallic specification, with a presentation true to the spirit of the M-production cars of that era.
Introduced in 1997, the Z3 M was developed to deliver a radical take on the Z3 roadster. Drawing on the formula that made the brand’s Motorsport models such a success, it pairs a naturally aspirated 3. 2-litre straight-six from the BMW M3 with a compact chassis and a drivetrain sending power exclusively to the rear wheels.
At a time when sports cars were still prioritising driving feel over pure performance figures, the Z3 M stands out for its particularly confident character. Its long bonnet, widened tracks, muscular rear arches and low driving position make it instantly recognisable within BMW’s line-up.
Today, the Z3 M holds a special place in the Motorsport range. It represents one of the last BMW M cars developed with a firmly analogue philosophy—without an excess of electronic aids, and with a direct connection between driver and machine.
The example we are offering is finished in Cosmosschwarz Metallic, one of the most emblematic colours from BMW’s palette at the time. Matched with the specific M-version details, it beautifully underlines the roadster’s taut lines and sporting character.
This Z3 M is currently owned by a dedicated BMW collector, a long-time admirer of the Bavarian marque. It also comes with a fully stamped maintenance book from within the BMW dealer network, proving the careful, thorough servicing it has received over the years.
Mechanically, the Z3 M is powered by the famous Motorsport 3. 2-litre inline six-cylinder with 6 intake throttles—an engine that has become legendary among BMW M enthusiasts. Known for its flexibility at low revs, its linear surge in power and its distinctive sound, it plays a major part in the model’s unique character.
Paired with a well-spaced manual gearbox, with the clutch replaced in 2021, it delivers a direct, authentic driving experience, true to the Motorsport philosophy of the period.
Servicing has been carried out with care throughout the years, as shown by the fully stamped maintenance book from the BMW network. A new battery was installed last year.
