Collectors and investors must keep the following points in mind: when it comes to Shelby Cobra (replicas), it’s absolutely critical that the French registration document (carte grise) matches what the vehicle really is—manufacturer, year, model, engine—so as to secure your purchase.
French legislation (FFVE) is extremely strict regarding replicas. For a replica to be eligible for a French (collection) registration certificate, it must be over 30 years old (manufacturing date), must no longer be in production, and must be in its original condition. Since this rule has been enforced since 2014 by the French government and the FFVE, very, very few replicas are accepted in France.
So any informed buyer should question the genuine legality of Cobras whose registration documents are dated 1965 or 1966 (unless that Cobra costs 2 million and is therefore a genuine original Shelby Cobra). The same applies if a Cobra from a modern replica brand that began production in 1995 or 2000 is being sold with a registration dated 1974, 1982 or 1986... these modern Cobra replicas are a case to avoid, because their registration documents are fraudulent.
In general, Cobra replicas sold with standard registration documents should be avoided, because in 99% of cases the replica has neither a European nor a French certificate of conformity (except for outright fakes)... and therefore it must go through an Isolated Title Reception (RTI) process with the French mines authority (UTAC & DREAL)... but they don’t issue them. That’s why it’s almost certain that a Cobra with standard registration documents has fraudulent “bogus” paperwork.
Note that the French government has recently launched an anti-fraud campaign targeting “bogus” registration documents. Cancellations of registration documents and heavy convictions are currently being handed down.
