Description
Volkswagen Beetle 1300 Automatic – 1968 – Royal Red
For sale: Volkswagen Beetle 1300 Automatic – 1968 – Royal Red L30A
On 6 September 1968, this magnificent Volkswagen Beetle left the VW works in Wolfsburg. A few days later, on 12 September 1968, it was registered for the first time in Germany—most likely as a demonstrator at the VW dealer Fa. Alfons v. Deschwanden in Offenburg, in the beautiful Black Forest region, close to the French border.
In February 1969, the car was sold to Mrs Fritsch, who drove it and looked after it carefully until 1976. After that, only a few owners followed one another, all in the Offenburg area. Noteworthy detail: from 1968 to 1987, this Beetle kept the same original registration plate—OG-KC-90. A wonderful testimony to its authenticity and well-preserved history.
After disappearing from the radar for several years, this Beetle reappeared in 2010 in the Sauerland region. Once again, it has lived in postcard-worthy scenery. The whole story of this car breathes care, calm, and passion.
This is a particularly beautiful and rare example: a Volkswagen Beetle 1300 Automatic in the very rare Royal Red L30A paint. The car was fully restored a few years ago, while its original character has been carefully preserved.
The specification in which this Beetle is presented today is extremely rare. It’s the first European model year with the vertical headlamps, combined with the very rare automatic gearbox. What’s more, this Beetle still has the details from the earliest models so appreciated by enthusiasts:
absence of crescent-shaped vents behind the rear windows
early-model dashboard, unpadded
a particularly original-looking interior
even the original floor mats are still there
The 1300cc engine producing 44 bhp runs perfectly, and the automatic gearbox changes gears smoothly. This Beetle offers comfortable—surprisingly modern—driving for its era. The doors and lids shut perfectly.
Among the original accessories present:
slightly openable rear windows (“pop-out”)
bamboo shelf under the dashboard
original radio delete blanking plate (the car has never had a radio)
Everything shows that this Volkswagen has always been looked after and carefully maintained. Back in the day, many automatic Beetles were modified by tuners thanks to their independent rear suspension, ideal for lowering the car. That’s why an automatic example that has remained original like this one is especially rare today.
The car comes with:
its original German “Pappbrief” from 1968
its modern German registration documents
a valid TÜV inspection certificate until December 2027
In summary: an extremely charming, rare, and highly authentic Volkswagen Beetle Automatic, with an exceptionally well-documented history.
