A bit of history…
The Volkswagen Scirocco is a motor car derived from the Volkswagen Golf, from which it takes all the mechanics and platform, which was marketed by the German brand Volkswagen from 1974 to 1988 in France, and until 1992 in Germany. It bears the name of a violent Saharan wind, very dry and very hot, which blows over North Africa (cf. Sirocco).
This name is often a subject of controversy between those who favour the masculine gender and those who favour the feminine gender to describe the Scirocco coupé: this article therefore uses both expressions "the Scirocco" indifferently to refer to this vehicle.
There were two successive Scirocco models: the Scirocco Mk1, produced from April 1974, was replaced by the Scirocco Mk2 from May 1981 onwards. After the presentation in 2006 of a concept car called Iroc, Volkswagen announced the arrival in 2008 of a third version of the Scirocco coupé.
Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981 and marketed from May onwards, the second Scirocco model appeared before the Golf 2. As a result, the running gear and chassis remained identical to those of the first Golf.
The Scirocco evolved inside and out, with rounder lines, which were fashionable at the time, but which did not meet with universal approval as they lacked personality. More powerful engines were used, in particular the excellent 1, 800 cc 112 bhp, crowned by a 1, 800 cc fuel-injected 16-valve 139 bhp which unfortunately proved to be rather unresponsive, giving acceleration inferior to the 112 bhp.
The bodywork remained a 3-door coupé with four seats.
Total production of Scirocco 2 was 291, 497 units. So nearly 800, 000 Scirocco 1 and 2 were built over 18 years, which is remarkable for a car of this type.
