Description

PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3. 0 TARGA SPORT TYPE YEAR 1977

The Porsche 911 Carrera 3. 0 holds a special place in the history of the entire Porsche 911 range.
The Carrera 3. 0 engine is essentially the 911 Turbo engine (2993 cc) without a turbocharger.
Furthermore, the lighter 6-bolt flywheel and the shorter crankshaft from the 2. 7 RS were fitted to it.
To compensate for the lack of turbo boost from the 930, Porsche increased the compression ratio and optimised the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection to produce a three-litre unit claiming 200 bhp and 255 Nm of torque at 4, 200 rpm with a kerb weight of 1, 120 kg.
Torque delivered relatively low in the rev range, which means you don't need to chase power high up the dial, and the solid aluminium engine block from the 930 turbo make it a particularly reliable model.
The Carrera 3. 0 was marketed and distributed exclusively in Europe in the 1976 and 1977 model years. 3, 687 examples were built, of which 2, 564 were coupes and only 1, 123 Targas, of which 646 were produced in 1977.
The final cars in the J series (the model presented here is part of this) were offered in one of two specifications: "Classic" or "Sport" (the model presented).
The "Carrera 3. 0 Sport" benefited from Bilstein dampers (instead of Koni), 16-inch wheels (instead of 15), a front lip spoiler and a whale-tail rear spoiler.
The gearbox is a 5-speed (option).
For the 1977 model year, the most notable change was the adoption of power-assisted brakes. At the same time, clutch operation became much easier and smoother from 1977 onwards.
For the reasons mentioned above, the 1977 model seems to us today the best choice.
