Description
For sale: 1970 Maserati Ghibli 5000 SS with 4. 9-litre engine, one of the rare French-delivered originals. Model history: The first-generation Maserati Ghibli (1966-1973) is today among the most sought-after Italian GTs amongst collectors. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and built in limited series, it stands out for its iconic design, strong performance and sophisticated mechanicals. In total, Maserati built 1, 170 coupés and 125 Spyders, making it a particularly rare model on the market. Among the various versions offered, the Maserati Ghibli SS 5000 (4. 9 L) holds a special place. Built in just 425 coupé examples, it represents the most refined evolution of the model. Its 4, 930 cc V8, fed by four Weber carburettors and featuring a double overhead camshaft layout, produces 335 bhp. As a result, it offers high torque, ideal for driving that is both smooth and powerful. Moreover, one of the Ghibli SS's major technical assets is its dry-sump lubrication system. This solution, usually reserved for high-end engines, guarantees optimal reliability at high revs. It also improves cooling and allows a particularly low bonnet, the signature of Ghibli styling. Combined with a ZF 5-speed manual gearbox, a rigid tubular chassis and ventilated disc brakes, this package gives the car remarkable dynamic behaviour. Thus, with a top speed close to 280 km/ h, the Ghibli 4. 9 L stands out as one of the most capable GTs of the late 1960s. Its rarity, timeless styling and quality of mechanicals make it a particularly prized model. Finally, for enthusiasts, the Maserati Ghibli 4. 9 L represents the perfect blend of exclusivity, performance and technical refinement. It remains today a centrepiece of any collection dedicated to European GTs. History of this Maserati Ghibli 4. 9 L SS: Delivered new in August 1970 by the Thépenier dealership, this Ghibli was ordered in Bianco Polo with black interior. Initially, its owner, Monsieur Bouabdalla, kept it until 1975. It then changed hands before being acquired in 1977 by its third and last owner. This is therefore a genuine third-owner car, a particularly sought-after feature on an already rare model. Subsequently, a keen mechanic and knowledgeable collector, this owner decided in 1997 to have it repainted in Rosso Rubino. He drew inspiration from the Ghibli driven by Maurice Ronet in La Piscine. This shade, both elegant and quintessentially Maserati, enhances its visual presence today while remaining in keeping with its character. Over the years the car accompanied its owner on his travels: first in the United States, then in the United Kingdom, before returning to Paris about ten years ago. Throughout this period it was carefully maintained by its owner and used with discernment. It has therefore benefited from constant care by an enthusiast keen to preserve its originality. Bodywork: Repainted in 1997 in Rosso Rubino, this Ghibli retains the sculptural shape conceived by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Carrozzeria Ghia, its original coachbuilder. It today displays deep gloss, particularly precise panel alignment and a remarkably sound structure, a sign of a car that has been respected and very well preserved over the decades. Upholstery: The upholstery is 99% original. The carpets and headlining are in remarkable condition, free of sagging or fading. The leather shows an even, very healthy patina, rare for a Ghibli of this era. Only part of the driver's seat base was redone a few years ago, out of a desire for preservation, while perfectly respecting the original colour and grain. Such a high level of preservation remains exceptional, revealing a car that has been looked after, respected and protected throughout its life. Engine: Fitted with its original V8, this Maserati Ghibli will require a complete overhaul in our workshops. Every component, from the dry sump to the Weber carburettors, has been checked and serviced, to guarantee performance faithful to the authenticity of this classic V8. Gearbox: This Maserati Ghibli is fitted with its original 5-speed ZF gearbox, in perfect working order. Gear changes are smooth and precise, offering total control of the V8 and a driving experience true to the Gran Turismo spirit of the Ghibli. The transmission, carefully maintained, ensures perfect synergy with the engine. This guarantees progressive acceleration and driving that is both dynamic and comfortable over any distance.
