This absolutely delightful example is a bus we have known for several years having sold it locally in 2016. Due to a change of personal circumstances, the bus is now being offered for sale again ready for the summer.
A highly desirable ‘early bus’ featuring the iconic smaller rear window and tailgate only present on pre 63 vehicles. This bus is a 100% authentic having been built in Germany on the 13th June 1962 and supplied to the USA. We have a birth certificate from Germany from the Stiftung Automuseum confirming its provenance and original specification from new. The buses original colours from factory are still the same colours you see it in now which are L325 Mouse Grey and L87 Pearl White. This is quite unusual as very often the original colours are changed throughout the decades and this comes as a pleasant surprise.
The bus has spent the vast majority of its life in a dry climate so the shell has not had to suffer abuse that would lead to excessive rusty panels requiring replacement. This means that a sympathetic restoration was required, which involved a strip back and repaint in its original colour scheme making sure to retain all of the important original features including the popular US Spec bumpers with towel rails and over riders as well as the 6 side opening pop out windows. The paintwork on the bus looks glorious and has been meticulously cared for and machine polished to a brilliant shine. The bus still has its original steel wheels complete with whitewall tyres and polished stainless hubcaps which in our opinion looks the very best retaining the traditional 1960s feel!
Reconditioned 1600cc engine recently installed and full mechanical check over carried out including regular routine maintenance since 2016 by the previous owner who had meticulous attention to detail.
The original full width front bench seat which was factory supplied only with early buses is still intact and has been professionally reupholstered along with the door cards in Basalt Grey, which as per the birth certificate is the completely original style vinyl spec (now available in near perfect reproduction by Wolfsburg West). The bus has also had a brand new headliner professionally installed in original factory perforated off white vinyl material.
The interior currently comprises of an L shaped layout with matching grey vinyl seating cushions, high gloss laminate grey flooring and a detachable pedestal style table and leg that can be removed and stowed in the rear with ease. There is a champagne bottle holder integrated into the joinery as well as room for six champagne flutes.
Please note that we specialise in the restoration of these vehicles and in particular, the build and installation of bespoke interiors from start to finish. We are able to easily remove the current interior layout and build a brand new interior from scratch to your exact specification. This can include gas cookers, sinks, fridges and the installation of a rock n’ roll bed with fresh upholstery.
