In the late 80’s it looked likely that Rover would stop making the Mini in what had become the hot hatch era. The owner of DHR586L also owned a video production company and was a regular customer of Janspeed. He proposed to them that they make a video of how to build a fast road going Mini, in the hope of showing that the Mini could still compete with the new hot hatchbacks. Janspeed agreed, and it was decided to rebuild DHR586L. Originally a Mk2 Cooper S, the car still retains the twin tanks and 130mph speedo. Jan Odor, Frank Swanston, and David Vizard took on the project of building a car that could compete with the hot hatches of the era, with Silver Productions making a video of the process. The car is in fantastic rust-free condition; it is quick, loud and enormous fun. I am the second owner, having acquired the car in 2011 and have used it very sparingly. The odometer was set to zero at the time of the rebuild and now reads 5, 600. I was told by the first owner that the car was mostly laid up after the rebuild and had to be extensively recommissioned prior to my purchase. This is a completely unique car built by three motoring legends, with the whole process being documented on video. In addition, the car has featured in two magazine articles one in 1990 and one in 2015. A VHS video, DVD and magazines all come with the car, as well as two original Janspeed keychains.
