Beautiful Pininfarina-bodied 1965 404 cabriolet with Kugelfischer KF1 fuel injection. One of only a small handful in the UK, this car spent most of its life in France until it was registered here in September, 2015.
Restored in France in the 1980s. Large file of photographs and bills. Since I have owned the car it has undergone much further work with a 404 specialist in France including rebuilt engine with new pistons and rings, replacement gearbox, new clutch, fuel injection system entirely rebuilt and properly set-up, partial new exhaust. Bills for many thousands of pounds included. It is only for sale now to fund the purchase of another car.
Overall a solid, tidy driver but certainly not concours. Some areas of paint imperfection and minor rust bubbling on the body. Has had welding to the sills, crossmember etc. Totally solid car that wants minor cosmetic work to bring it up to scratch.
Front seats, carpets and door cards all need work. Rear seat in very good condition. Hood operates fine but the covering is in poor shape and needs replacing. Comes with an incredibly rare factory hard top in contrasting black, which looks fantastic and turns the car into a civilised grand tourer.
Correct Michelin XAS radials fitted in 2015 and still in excellent condition.
The Peugeot 404 cabriolet is a perfect mixture of rugged, easily-available mechanical components and exotic styling. Although not a sports car, it is a superb long-distance cruiser and will sit happily at 75mph+ all day. The suspension is among the best of its day and superbly insulates the driver from the road surface. The steering is light and direct with excellent feel and overall it is a pleasure to drive. It attracts admiring looks wherever it goes and most people are surprised to discover it is a ‘humble’ four-cylinder Peugeot.
Only around 2200 404 coupé and cabriolets survive, with numbers split approximately 50/ 50 between the two body styles. With rising values of these cars in France (top examples are advertised for around €50, 000) most have now been totally restored, with a few basket cases in need of full restoration coming out of the woodwork. It is highly unusual to find an example halfway between these two states – in good overall condition, a solid driver in need of minor work to bring it up to scratch.
