Description
This classic motorcycle did more than any other model to establish Yamaha as a trading force in the USA motorcycle market . This AT1 was made in 1968 for export to the American market in 1969 and only produced in pearl white in this year. This classic motorcycle has matching frame and engine numbers and has undergone a full frame off restoration which is reflected in the price . The engine has been fully rebuilt with new top and bottom end bearings and a new conrod. The cylinder has been rebored and honed for a new . 75 oversize cylinder and pin. The crank has been rebalanced with a new pin, crank and gear shaft bearings and seals have all been replaced and has new engine case bolts and gaskets all round . The clutch plates are new and the basket has been deburred and re-sprung. The gear selector springs have been renewed. The bike has a new wiring loom and a refurbished dynamo with new brushes, mica removal and deburring all connected to a refurbed starter switch . The frame and swing arm have been stripped rust stopped and repainted and all nuts and bolts have been reconditioned. The engine cases have been polished and the cylinder and head repainted. Front forks and rear suspension have been stripped refurbished with new seals and oils, repainted, polished and reassembled. All frame components have been stripped and repainted or in the case of chrome repolished including the wheels. All frame component anti vibration bushes have been replaced with new ones. Clutch and brake cables are new.
The headlight bowl, fork ears and oil and fuel tanks have been stripped rust stopped and repainted in the original pearl white and finished where applicable with the original spec labels and pinstripes. The electric start works well and so do the aftermarket indicators which the original bike was not provided with in this model year and now only provided for modern convenience which are easily removed if not required. The seat has been stripped and rust stopped repainted and foam re -furbed and recovered with a new Yamaha vinyl. A lithium battery is fitted to ensure the bike starts first time from the battery and the dynamo charges well through the new regulator unit although a kick start is also available itself refurbished with a new gear and friction clip.
The front brake shoes have been replaced and front and rear brakes work as originally intended . The front and rear lights have been cleaned, polished and bulbs renewed and the brake lights work perfectly from both front and rear switches which have been renewed or refurbished. A new petcock valve is installed and the carburettor has been sonically cleaned and rejetted and tuned and is filtered from the tank with a new in line filter.
You won't find another one in the UK as complete and in such fine condition as this in the first year of its production. It spent most of its life in the USA before coming to the UK and was last licensed in Texas in 1983. These bikes are extremely rare even in the USA where they were originally exported. This great looking classic bike is a worthy contender , is registered on a V5 in my name and is mot and tax exempt.
