This is a gorgeous Harley VR1000 from 1994.
This is the first pure and purpuse built racing motorcycle made by Harley Davidson. Everything else previous was a modified production machine. It was built as a more modern, 8-valve DOHC liquid cooled machine to succeed to the XR1000 race bike and take aim for the pervasive Ducati 851. The VR shared nothing in common with other models, neither designs nor parts! It was a bottom-up design, almost a hodge-podge of work from separate firms outside of HD including Roush, Penske and Wilwood, who, respectively, developed the engine, suspension and brakes. With that lineup, the goal was only to create America's best! Had the machine come out closer the start of development in 1991 it would have been a contender. However, the machine came late and didn't race until 1994. The results were just okay, for a debut machine. It saw moderate success on tight tracks but it lacked top end. The project itself had been contentious since it's start, and following it's lackluster debut, management pulled the plug.
In order to race, 50 road models were required to be produced for homologation purposes. So, Harley produced 50 road models and sold them for $49, 490 USD each. Funny enough it was never qualified to be street legal in the US due to tight emissions rules at the time. These 50 machines were homologated in Poland only! Production models varied slightly from race models, of course. Production models had Ohlins suspension in place of the Penske, and of course lights and electric starter among others.
Up for sale today is one of those 50 road models.
We are selling this bike on behalf of one of our best customers. He picked this bike up in Australia some years ago and had it in his collection since.
This bike has zero miles ridden. Condition is what you should expect for a 26 year old machine that has been properly stored since new.
