A happy marriage of Triumph power and Norton roadholding, the Triton is rightly regarded by many enthusiasts as the British sports special. But what makes this particular Triton a very special ‘special’ is the Shorrock supercharger. The project is the last undertaken by retired (now deceased) Vincent engineer Cyril McCann. Cyril called upon his Stevenage factory experience of supercharging in constructing this unique motorcycle, supervising the project which was carried out by respected engineer Derek Ratcliffe and Cyril’s son Richard with assistance from a host of well known UK performance specialists.
The machine combines a unit-construction Triumph motor with Norton’s classic Featherbed frame, the latter originating in a Dominator 88 dating from 1954. The 750cc T140V engine has the five-speed gearbox (as denoted by the ‘V’) and dates from June 1975, being one of the last produced with a right-side gearchange. Naturally, the very best available components were used in this machine’s construction, including a Mick Hemmings belt primary drive and clutch; Nourish crankshaft, con-rods and splined gearbox main-shaft; Burlen SU carburettor; Precision Surface Preparation rocker arms, gudgeon pins and pistons; Boyer ignition; Shorrock C75B ‘blower’; Converta engine plates; Barleycorn rear-sets; stainless-steel valves; and a genuine Vickers Supermarine Spitfire boost gauge (Cyril having been a wartime Spitfire engineer). Specially designed cams give ‘Manx-type’ timing with slightly more overlap, while the results are available in the form of dynamometer print-outs.
The ‘wideline’ Featherbed frame is fitted with short Roadholder forks, widened and stiffened swinging arm, T140 rear hub and Manx tls front brake. Finished in classic silver and black, the bike was completed towards the end of 2005, having been featured in several issues of Real Classic magazine earlier in 2004/ 2005. MoT’d and taxed for the road in 2005, it has completed only a handful of shakedown runs since completion and will require further running-in. A guaranteed head-turner at any event, this unique ‘blown’ Triton is offered with sundry invoices and Swansea V5 registration document.
