For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Lightweight in Drab Olive (1980).
Petrol 2286cc. Will be supplied with 12 months MOT, and exempt thereafter. 750 tyres. New Canvas. Recently refurbished. 12v, RHD. Twin Tanks. Released in 1998.
Here we have for sale a quite exceptional lightweight, presented in 'stripped down' format in the photographs. This vehicle was acquired from a gentleman who used it as a daily driver for 10 years, but due to ill health has now had to give it up. This vehicle was released from service late in 1998, and has had just five former keepers. This vehicle WILL come built up, with the easy to remove doors, sticks and new canvas (photos also included in this advert).
Externally, this lightweight is presented in good condition with many of the features one would hope to see - bridging plate, bonnet mounted spare, 750 military tyres, bumperettes front and rear, and all correct military lighting with the screw lenses. There is a swingaway wheel carrier fitted to the rear, and the original split tailgate has been adapted to open sideways, giving superior access to the rear for passengers and loading. Although this is non-standard, it is well done and we think it looks great so have elected to leave it as it is.
The interior is equally nice as one can see from the photographs. There are three standard recent seats in the front, with bench seats in the rear. The dash area is particularly pleasing with the original galvanised handle, vent openers, flyscreens and correct heater and demist setup.
What really sets this vehicle out against its rivals is the manner in which it drives. Our founder, John Brown Sr started off in Land Rover® ownership with a lightweight, which he dearly loved. He took the opportunity to test drive this vehicle and immediately fell in love with it..... the engine sounds amazing, it pulls like a train, has a tight gearbox, sharp brakes and pin-point direct steering. It is quite simply the nicest driving lightweight we have ever had the pleasure of owning. These lightweights are ideal for summer use - leaving it stripped down ready for those long summer evenings, and perhaps when not in use to be tucked up in a garage through the winter. Of course, with roof and doors fitted and heater in action they make superbly confident off-roaders through mud or snow.
In short, if you are looking for a lightweight which drives as well as the day it was built for military service, then this is the vehicle to go for. With the simple 12v electrics rather than the troublesome 24v system, they are much easier to look after long-term, with the added benefit of a front middle seat. By next year this vehicle will be MOT & Tax Exempt and will therefore prove a very simple vehicle to run long term.
In truth, this should really be a vehicle to be retained rather than sold, but we are a business and not a museum! The mileage is listed at just under 64, 000 miles and there are a number of MOTs which would suggest that this is genuine - especially in light of the manner in which it drives. Good lightweights like this are hard to find, and are proving to be sound investments for their owners.
