Rare opportunity to purchase a genuine 1978 BMW R100/ RS Motosport – one of 200 imported and sold through registered BMW main dealers. I have owned this bike since 1980 when it had one previous owner. It was regularly used until 2004 when it developed a generator fault from which time it was declared SORN until 2019, when it was fully serviced and recommissioned for the road with generator, carbs, brake cylinders and master cylinder all overhauled, new oils and fluids throughout and with the cast wheels also refinished. New parts provided include inner tubes and front tyre, battery, disc pads, front and rear brake light switches and indicator relay. It is not immaculate, but it is in very good condition for its year and would make an excellent base for a full nut and bolt restoration.
It comes complete with the original blue saddle cover and white Krauser panniers, first aid kit, owner’s handbook, cable lock (no key) and the fabled BMW full toolkit and a full service history during my ownership. It is now registered as an historic vehicle and thus exempt from road fund licence and MoT. Enthusiasts will note that the fairing does not have the red headlight panel and nor is the Motosport pinstriping present to the top fairing and side panels, but this was the condition in which I bought it – my guess is that the fairing got damaged and was replaced by the former owner, who I never met, purchasing the bike from a dealer, who had not registered the bike between owners.
This machine does have a defective odometer and the last accurate mileage reading I have was for the 1989 MoT when it read 28990 miles. Prior to that the 1985 MoT certificate records 18, 915 miles.
But then in 1990 it read 11474 miles and in 1991 it read 11, 409 miles. Absurdly in 1993 it read 179 miles and in 1994, it actually read only 109 miles. Following the birth of my daughter in 1999, it has not been used so regularly and at its last MOT in 2004, before being declared SORN, the odometer read 9, 566 miles. During its recommissioning, Mark Holden Motorcycles of Bromley recorded the mileage as 8547 miles. In my estimation, this machine has covered in total, approx. 42, 000-43, 000 miles. In conclusion, I should add that the speedometer functions correctly.
