Reluctantly now available to pass on to a new loving owner to continue the renovation process, is my 1963 Consul Cortina Mk1 "Open" 2 door.
This car would have started life as a kit of parts produced in Dagenham for shipment via the recently introduced "Standard shipping container" down to the Ford assembly plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. T
The cost of shipping closely packed components is vastly more efficient than whole cars but more importantly, import duties are avoided as the finished car is then a South African product.
This followed Ford of America's globalisation philosophy of the time, with assembly plants being established across the globe to make Ford a worldwide brand.
I personally imported this car from Pretoria back in 2016. I had her shipped overland down to Durban where she was driven onto the RORO vessel and off again under her own power at Southampton where I personally collected her for the short trailer ride back up to Oxfordshire.
I have paid all UK taxes and have her NOVA certificate so the simple process of UK registration with an age related "A" suffix plate is all that is required once complete.
I am told that the car was converted by the South African equivalent of Crayford, a company called Suni, however I have not been able to find any evidence to verify this.
As can be seen from the photos, the car is a very early pre-airflow model with the extremely rare linear speedo.
It has the 109 block which I don't believe is correct from new but I am sure there is greater knowledge out there with regard to model specifics. It has never had a soft top as considered not required in SA.
It was decided to complete a full nut and bolt strip and re-build the but as you can see, although started, this is now, sadly, unlikely to be completed in my custodianship.
This is therefore being passed on, very much as a project for completion. All parts are included with the car as per photos.
The body is in remarkable condition but not without a little work remaining and the engine is stripped for inspection.
The main bearings had play and the bores are showinh signs of wear so a full re-build is required.
There are areas requiring attention to the floor-pan as it has had a spray-on covering applied which appears to have trapped moisture over the years.
To Conclude :
She has to move on now but how do you put a price on such a rare and unusual example ?
The car along with all the associated parts are available for any inspection just to the East of Bicester. only then can you make your own valuation.
As a guide I will put my valuation at £12k but I am open to your considered assessment.
