For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 3 Ragtop in NATO Green (1984).
Diesel 2286cc. Will be supplied with 12 months MOT (passed the last one with no advisories). Ex-military with convoy switch and twin tanks. 6 Seater. Deluxe Highback front seats. Centre Cubby Box for storage.
We are delighted to present for sale this handsome ex-military Series 3 Land Rover®, not often seen in this order…… Land Rovers® have been used in the military for decades due to rugged dependability and ease of repair when in the field. We don’t, however, see too many Series 3 Land Rovers® with the military features seen on this example.
Externally, as the photos show, the bodywork is remarkably straight and sports the paintwork and colour one would expect to see on an ex-military example. There are lots of period features, such as the rear grab handles, original galvanised bumper, bonnet mounted spare, sand canvas, larger defender mirrors for increased visibility and additional rear reversing spot and fog light – handy for these darker evenings, should you need to be seen or see better! The vehicle sits on a road biased set of tyres, which give a good compromise between road-holding ability and off-road performance if required. These slightly smaller tyres also give lighter steering and stronger acceleration, which is handy with these diesel units.
The interior is a really nice place to be – again, the military central convoy switch survives, and there are a pair of techno deluxe highback seats, with central cubby box for additional storage, again in the matching techno trim. There is a seat belt bar for over the shoulder 3 point belts, which makes the vehicle safer for those inside. The rear houses a pair of rear bench seats, to bring seating to six including the driver. Deluxe matting is fitted to the front footwells with a load mat to the rear space to protect the floor from scratches and muddy shoes! The military data plate survives on the seat box with its military number, so a keen owner could research the military history of this vehicle if desired…. the speedo reads in KM’s, so there could be an interesting story to be uncovered here.
Out on the road, this old girl drives as one would expect – it has a fit diesel engine, which starts with minimal glow, and runs clear when out on the black stuff too, just as it should. The brakes are sharp and the steering is very direct and light, thanks to the smaller rubber. The vehicle also has twin tanks fitted – both of which have worked during our testing, and the fuel gauge reads on both too – a lovely touch and doubles the range of the vehicle between the pumps. Very few vehicles have the twin tank arrangement still in situe and working as it should – so this is a really useful added feature giving a range of around 500 miles between fills.
In summary, if you are looking for a versatile and cost-effective Series 3 Land Rover® for the family to enjoy, then this could be for you. With upcoming MOT & Tax Exemption in 2024, it should prove to be a solid investment whilst also being cheap to run in the meantime thanks to classic insurance and simple maintenance.
