Description

1961  4 former keepers A comfortable 4 seat convertible.

Factory fitted with aluminium doors (in addition to the standard aluminium bonnet and boot lid) together with painted wire wheels. Silver with red leather interior.

We have owned this lovely old Alvis for the last for the last 17 years and used it sparingly. Out of a total production of 784 TD21’s less than half were dropheads. Alvis supplied the chassis to Park Ward who then coach built the bodies. At the time of its launch The Motor described it as having a “Jeeves-like quality of responding to its master’s whim”. The straight six engines is near silent at idle, with a deep, healthy burble from the twin tailpipes and a surprisingly eager throttle response. Classic & Sportscar described these cars as; “Posher than Jaguar, not as stuffy as a Daimler or as self consciously eccentric as a Bristol, the Alvis is a car that seems to put a full stop to the era of Vintage values. Spirited and square-jawed, I like its practicality and its no-nonsense manliness. It was a brisk car for the mature man of affairs who didn’t just drive but ‘motored’. The Alvis was a brisk car for the military man who liked a sharp crease in his trousers. What other car could Douglas Bader possibly have driven?”

Work carried out over recent years by Alvis specialist Red Triangle (with only 340 miles driven since):
• New inner & outer cills
• New lower wings
• New clutch master cylinder
• New Coopercraft front brake callipers
• New cooper brake pipes and flexible pipes

Other work carried out elsewhere:
• New radial tyres x4
• New Mohair hood with new wool headlining
• New front footwell carpets
• New battery December 2020

This is a good, usable, example that can be improved upon as you use it. There are numerous scruffy areas on the body, the seats have splits at the seams in places and the carpets are worn except for the front footwells. The major problem area on these TD21’s is the cills, which rust out. This car had both the outer and inner cills on both sides replaced by Red Triangle, at some considerable cost. Another significant expense on a large, 4 seater, convertible such as this is usually the convertible roof, a large component and very expensive to replace. This car has a new Mohair hood with new wool headlining.

This car represents a good value price point at which to acquire one of these rare cars. Try and find another like this at this level! I can send a PDF with further photographs. Although these classics do not need one, I am happy to put a new MOT on the car before it leaves if required. I might possibly look at a part exchange on something interesting.
