Beschreibung
This immaculate 1972 Saab 96V4 is one man’s dedicated pursuit to build the best historic rally car possible with as many genuine Saab Motorsport works parts as could be obtained.
This was undertaken over a period of approximately 6 years with comprehensive attention to detail, help and parts from international and national experts with no expense spared.
A good right-hand drive body shell was obtained which was blasted, epoxy-primed, two-pack primed, then Toreador Red top coat, with traditional white painted wheel arches and under bonnet as per works cars. Then the shell was strengthened to the specification required by Saab Motorsport, and some suspension parts seam-welded and gusseted, with all consumables replaced. Genuine Saab Forest springs and AVO adjustable shocks were fitted, along with strategic joints being poly-bushed.
All consumable brake parts were replaced. A second brake servo vacuum tank was fitted and a fly-off handbrake. Also fitted were 5 new Compomotive alloy wheels. A Four wheel alignment was undertaken to give 2 degrees negative camber on the front. Safety devices roll cage, full harness seatbelts, Lifeline automatic fire extinguisher system with electronic activation for inside or outside car were also fitted. Accessories include a Brantz rally meter and timer complete with 2 remote controls. Plus oil, ammeter and rev counter fitted with Saab Motolita steering wheel, extra fusebox and all extra components wired through a bank of relays.
The engine has been bored to 1815 cc. It has a new 7. 6 cam, which has been Tufftrided, big port head that was copper ringed with large valves, new guides and heavy duty rocker assembly. Also a lightened flywheel with competition clutch, crossover manifolds with new DCOE45 Webbers, steel timing gear, electronic ignition and a large-bore, through the floor, 2 into 1 exhaust system, big radiator and Kenlowe and oil cooler and catch tank. Some of the engine parts were refurbished from a Saab works Norwegian ice-racing V4.
The car has been fitted with an unused rebuilt Chris Partington Spec 1 gearbox.
The car has a new laminated windscreen along with all new window rubbers and bright trim. Also a new 77 litre fuel tank and twin pumps fitted with electronic isolating system and Goodridge 811 inter-connecting pipe work. Both front and rear bulkheads have been fire-proofed. Front and rear door-cards are still fitted and the car comes with a good rear seat (not fitted but may be required for certain types of rallying).
Also included are 4 very large plastic crates of various second-hand and new parts. There are some DCOE 40 Webbers and new steel timing gear. Also included are the following: genuine Saab V4 Workshop and Parts manuals, Webber tuning manual, Saab Sport and Rally manual and Parts catalogue, together with 2 very large ring binders of receipts along with drawings and correspondence.
This is just a brief synopsis of the time, effort and parts that have been spent to produce this car. Although shake-down runs and local driving have been completed to iron out any faults, and to finesse timing and carburettors, due to Covid restrictions it has not been put on a rolling road and sadly the owner passed away earlier this year. So I am advertising the car on behalf of his widow and although I had no part in this re-build/ restoration I do have 50 years of experience with Saab (mainly two-stroke) cars.
Most fasteners have been replaced with new, complete with nyloc fittings. It is this attention to detail that makes it, in my view, a one-off car. Most rally cars that you see advertised are over-priced, highly abused, worn-out examples of the marque. This car is ready to go and just waiting for its first rally.
Price is £21, 000 or higher offers. There is a very good write-up of this car with pictures in the Saab Owners Club Driver magazines May/ June 2017 and July/ August 2017.
I have a load more photographs, so please just ask. .
