Description
If you have seen the programmes ‘For the love of Cars’ staring Ant Anstead and Philip Glenister then this 1980 Volkswagen Mk1 Golf GTI needs no introduction to you all.
The story starts with a special owner named Walter Ainsworth whom bought a Mk1 GTI to restore, but sadly due to ill health it sat for a little too long, and had to go. Ant Anstead swung into action, picking up and planned the rebuild, deciding on a tribute to the ‘Pierburg’ sponsored Rally Car, as a nod to Walter’s rally mechanic past.
No expense spared, the whole car was stripped down to the bare metal and catalogued all the parts of the car. The car was given a new lease of life with a new paint scheme. Fitted all the rally spec requirements that were needed, including bucket seats, harnesses, roll-cage, hydraulic handbrake, upgraded steering and suspension. Two sets of halogen lamps were fitted to the front of the car. The engine was rebuilt by the owner.
Despite his illness he worked every day on his car to get to various events around the country and Europe with the help of a great many friends.
Due to the nature and speed in which the cancer spread, they had very little time to make any plans. Those of you that have followed Walter Ainsworth on social media and other circles know that he poured his heart and soul into his Golf Rally car including every penny he could muster.
This rally car whilst on build completion has all regulations to MSA ( Motor Sport Association) UK Approved, if you look even the safety roll bar certificates. If you look at some of the paper work, some will show the car had Spanish competition accreditation foreign papers. She is a nippy 1. 6 engine with performance cams and Wossner pistons.
