Description
Subjected to a fully documented bare metal restoration, and finished to the highest of standards, this stunning 1974 Porsche 914 Targa really needs to be seen (and heard) to be fully appreciated.
The history of the 914/ 6 starts in the 1960's when Porsche were looking to replace their entry level 912 and Volkswagen were looking to replace the Karman Ghia. It was decided they would collaborate and produce a joint sports car using Karman to produce the body. As development progressed it was decided that sharing a body would confuse potential customers and Porsche took over the project and the rest, as they say, is history.
Our 914 was born at the Karman factory in Osnabruck on the 16th Janaury 1974 and was duly shipped to the 914's biggest market, the USA being originally delivered by Porsche Grand Rapids in Michigan.
The vast history file carries numerous nostalgic documents with perhaps the most interesting being a letter from a Mrs Ewbanks, who was the last American custodian’s widow. Apparently, Mr Ewbanks was a test driver for Porsche in his youth and purchased the sportscar with a view to completing a full restoration, but ill health prevented this.
RTT144M was first registered in the UK in 1996 and owned by Mr O’Rourke and family for the next 12 years. It was under the ownership of Mr Nie of Knightsbridge that the car underwent a full restoration which included a full bare metal respray back to original period colour of sunflower yellow, which has been photographically recorded in an accompanying photo album. The interior also underwent a full renovation which included the fitment of the correct period radio, whilst other upgrades including a new wiring harness and a set of 5 genuine 914 alloy wheels (stamped 1974).
Mechanically the engine has been rebuilt by engine specialists Rawspeed and upgraded from 1700cc to 2000cc and now breathes through a pair of linked Dellorto carburettors and twin exit sports exhaust, whilst the gearbox has also received attention by marque specialist Williams Crawford which included a new second gear synchro and three-piece clutch.
With the price of classic 911’s now out of reach of mere mortals surely it won’t be long before people catch on to the Porsche 914/ 6. With its mid-engine lay out, classic boxer engine and a removal roof panel giving open top motoring these rare Porsche’s offer great value and the full Porsche ownership experience.
RTT144M offers a truly unique opportunity to purchase a beautifully restored 914 with numerous desirable upgrades and will be supplied to her new owner fully inspected, serviced and with a fresh MOT.
