The Alvis TA 14 was the company‘s first post-WWII offering. Essentially it was based on a widened and lengthened prewar Alvis 12/ 70 chassis and retained that model’s leaf spring suspension and mechanically operated brakes. The engine was enlarged to 1892cc and a four-speed gearbox with synchros on second, third and fourth gear was fitted. The attractive saloon body was built by Mulliners of Birmingham. It was a high quality and robust car with a top speed of around 74 miles an hour. Over 3000 examples were built between 1946 and 1950.
This lovely to two tone grey example was first registered on the 1st of January 1950. We understand that by the late 1980s the car was in a rather shabby but quite original state having spent a considerable part of its life in Kent. It was dry stored until 1993 and after recommissioning was used sparingly until 1996 at which point it was decided to begin an extensive restoration from the chassis-up. This comprehensive rebuild took many years to complete. In August 2016 the car was inspected by marque specialists Red Triangle who provided an insurance valuation of £18, 000 at that time. The car has recently been serviced and upgraded with a solid state voltage regulator of period appearance, and a new battery. Underneath it is quite the best example we've seen with an excellent repainted chassis, stainless steel exhaust system and evidence of new woodwork. The panel work was very well executed and the two-tone paintwork has a high gloss. High quality red-hide seating with matching carpets and a grey headlining completes the luxurious feel of the interior. On the road the engine is strong and lusty and the Alvis would be a comfortable car for longer distance touring.
We used the car ourselves to attend a vintage event at Easter and have covered around 50miles since recommissioning. Our conclusion? It's a little gem!
