Sensitively recommissioned to keep as many of the original features as possible.
I have owned the car for 10 years and the previous owner for 7 years. 14 owners total.
I have recently road tested the car after being garaged for well over ten years and it drove really well, very positive steering and suspension, pulled strongly in all 4 gears. All gauges were reading optimal and the only quibble was some hunting suggesting the carb needs tuning.
The carb is original and has been stripped and cleaned but the only new part was the accelerator pump diaphragm. It’s an auto-choke which seems to operate correctly.
The drive train has had very little work. The back axle was cleaned and replaced on the car. The gearbox had the top cover removed for a basic inspection and there were no obvious issues. There is a slight bearing noise when the clutch is depressed. The car had a new complete clutch although it is possible that the bearing is faulty. A new spigot bearing was fitted.
The correct engine (not matching number) was disassembled and inspected showing little signs of wear in the bottom end. The head was reworked with new valves, seats, guides and springs to be able to run on unleaded fuel. The original cam was reinstalled. A new fuel pump and filter was fitted.
The engine runs well with good oil pressure and sounds quiet.
The standard exhaust was renewed and the original exhaust manifold was kept.
The original wiring loom was disassembled and any spurious wires removed, any joints soldered and sleeved and refitted with no issues. A new indicator switch was fitted but the rest of the equipment is original. There is no rear foglight. The car has a brand new alternator, Starter motor and Battery.
The suspension has had polybushes fitted, with new Bilstein rear shocks and nearly new RS front struts, the strut tops are rose joints but these were on the car.
The rack is original and positive. The track control arms and track rod ends are new.
The brakes are working very well with new rear cylinders, pads and shoes, new caliper seals. The brakes need bedding in but the pedal is high and feels good.
The car was taken down to bare metal including the underside and some poor quality repairs were tground away and properly seam welded. Inner and outer rear arch repair sections were welded fully and blended in. The shell was rust treated and stonechip applied. New wings were fitted with a new front panel.
All the body gaps are good and the body is straight and very solid. The monocoque shell is still mostly in its original state without any major structural replacements, it has had sills, and some repairs but the roof, rear wings, door pillars, chassis legs, inner wings, strut towers all appear original.
The car was painted about seven years ago and the front wings are starting to micro-blister. The car would probably benefit from a good flat and polish. The paint is reasonable and shiny. The decals are new.
The interior is in good condition, the headlining is good and the pillar covers are reasonable. The seat covers are new and the door cards are good but the interior is brown and the cards are black (they can be sourced from Aldridges) The dash panels are complete but are tired and could do with recolouring. The centre console is not an RS and is probably from a Ghia, the radio is not wired in. The steering wheel appears to be original but the centre has been changed. There is a new boot carpet
The 5 original wheels stamped 1979 are what were on the car and have been refurbed, polished and painted dove grey. 5 brand new tyres.
The mirrors and door handles are chrome and should really be black but they were on the car so were refitted.
I am open to negotiation but only in person, I will not accept any silly offers.
There will be no test runs due to insurance purposes. I have driven the car and have been honest about its’ performance. The carb needs sorting and the brakes need bedding in before it goes on the road properly. Apologies for the pictures in the rain, can’t help the weather.
So strictly no test pilots or tyre kickers.
