I bought this Lotus Elan during lockdown, thinking i would start restoring her at some point, but it is a long way down the list of cars that require my attention, so i have decided to sell.

The car is a late 1970 S4 DHC on a J plate, November. If the car had sat in the showroom for much longer, it would have gone back to the factory to be Sprinted. It has only had 3 owners. The second owner, an employee of Bell and Colvill, the supplying dealer, built it for the first owner when new, and subsequently then bought it from the first owner when he wanted to sell. The second owner owned the car for 35 years.

A very original car, supplied in a rare shade of green from the factory, and only having had one respray in its life, so there is very little paint to remove. The car should be repainted in its original colour. When did you last see a green Elan on the road, or off the road for that matter?

Everything is there to complete the restoration, correct Chapman wheel, correct Sparto wing repeaters, original matching numbers engine, gearbox, seats , instruments, servo, correct and rare stainless steel sill trims, correct and rare washer bag! etc. NB The mileage stated in the blurb of the advert is not correct, I was relying on my memory. The odometer shows 65320, which I believe to be accurate, baring in mind that the car was dry stored for 30 years, and almost certainly the block will still be on its original bore size. To sum up, this is a low owners, COMPLETE car, as can been seen, not just a bodyshell plonked on a chassis with 50 boxes of parts.

The car still retains it original chassis with the chassis number clearly visible. 90% of the chassis is still in red oxide from the factory and is well worth saving, but if you did want to put a new chassis on the car, I can supply a genuine Lotus galvanised unit, with LR number, that I was keeping to fit to my Sprint, but I doubt I will get round to that now.

If restored well and correctly, S4 DHC's fetch upwards of £40k so this will make a very worthwhile project for someone.
