Harley-Davidson had been building the Sportster for years but by the mid-1970s it had become obvious that something better would be required to compete with the hottest new road bikes from Europe and Japan. Harley's response was the XLCR 'Café Racer' with matt black-finished engine cases, matching exhaust system and sleek glass fibre bodywork. The XLCR still couldn't compete with the opposition and traditional Harley owners didn't know what to make of it. Sales were disappointing and the model was dropped after only two years in production. Only about 3, 000 were made and today the rare and stylish XLCR is highly prized by collectors. This superb example appears to have been imported from the US in about 2009 and has been part of a private collection for some years. It appears to be in excellent condition, and was started recently, however the usual recommissioning following minimal use, would be advisable. In the file there is a V5C, a selection of bills, an original owner’s manual and parts catalogue and various other papers.
