1954 Wolseley 4/ 44 Saloon (Restored - £££‘s spent)
Celebrated design prodigy Gerald Palmer’s brief for the all-new Wolseley required him to use standard parts from the newly-formed BMC company’s components range. Hence the 4/ 44’s elegant body shell was shared with the MG Magnette ZA, give or take a few minor cosmetic changes.
That’s why the Wolseley 4/ 44 we are offering has such a premium 1950s look about it. That superb styling extends to the car’s interior. The inclusion of leather seats and walnut veneer dash emphasise the Wolseley’s upmarket positioning.
The burgundy bodywork on this particular car is outstanding, and the chromework is similarly excellent. The car’s design still turns heads even today; it looks like a high-ranking minister’s car from the late 1940s, and yet the resemblance to an early Jaguar suggests workhorse-like power.
The 46hp 1250cc XPAG engine performs impeccably, having being fully overhauled and the 4-speed column change gearbox gives smooth and precise changes. The ride quality is first-rate, helped by the independent front suspension and the rack-and-pinion steering which gives the car a nimble feel.
The interior features red leather upholstery and the walnut dashboard and instrument panel have a very luxury look and feel to them.
Other period features include, badge bar, white wall tyres and working semaphore indicators incorporating LED flashing units.
These are now very rare and much sought-after cars in this condition. All in all, a stunning show car.
Comes with original Owner’s and Workshop Manuals, original colour BMC Sales Brochure, Engine overhaul bills etc.
