Launched in 1954, the Jaguar XK140 was broadly similar to, though more refined than, its sensational XK120 predecessor, major engineering changes being confined to the repositioning of the engine 3" further forward and the adoption of rack-and-pinion steering as used on the racing C-Type. The suspension and brakes remained much as before, though with stiffer torsion bars at the front and telescopic shock absorbers replacing the previous lever type at the rear. Outwardly the newcomer was distinguishable by its revised radiator grille, rear lights incorporating flashing indicators, and larger bumpers - the latter adopted to withstand the cut and thrust of urban parking. XK140 performance was well up to the standards set by its exemplary predecessor, contemporary magazine road-tests regularly recording top speed figures in excess of 120mph. Tested by Road & Track magazine, a USA-specification XK140 MC (as the C-type cylinder head-equipped SE version was known there) recorded a 0-60mph time of 8. 4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 121. 1mph, highly respectable figures even today.
This XK140's current (third) owner purchased the car from its owner in Florida where it had been sold new. The accompanying JDHT Certificate confirms that the numbers match and the car still has its original tool kit, jack, keys and Jaguar key fob with the selling dealer's name and address. The vendor advises us that the XK was somewhat run down when it was purchased for restoration, but the underlying chassis/ body structure required almost no repairs.
In 2015 the XK was treated to a 'body off' restoration by Concours Classics of Rochester, New York. The body was repainted and all brightwork, including the wheels, re-chromed. The interior and upholstery were completely re-trimmed with Connolly leather and the hood re-covered with mohair; there is a mohair tonneau in addition. The engine was rebuilt with surfaces decked, cylinders honed, and new pistons and slightly 'hotter' camshafts installed. The provision of electronic ignition and an electric cooling fan are worthwhile upgrades.
Imported into the UK in 2016, the car is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition, although as with all Moss boxes, changing from 1st to 2nd when cold requires some finesse. A complete record of the vendor's email correspondence with the restorers is available together with some photographs of the restoration process and related bills. Towards the end of 2022 the car was refreshed and detailed by Historic Automobiles of Adhurst ready for sale.

Buyers' Premium and Charges
Like the vast majority of auctioneers Bonhams charge a Buyer's Premium on the Hammer Price of each Lot purchased and this is subject to VAT. Some lots may also be subject to VAT on the Hammer Price and these lots will be clearly marked with a symbol ( †, ?, *) printed beside the lot number.
For Automobilia the Buyer's Premium is 27. 5% on the first £20, 000 of the hammer price; 26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20, 001 up to and including £700, 000; 20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700, 001 up to and including £4, 000, 000 and 13. 9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4, 000, 001. (subject to VAT)
For Motor Cars and Vehicle Registration Numbers the Buyer's Premium will be 15% on the first £500, 000 of the Hammer Price of each Lot, and 12% on the balance thereafter.
VAT at the standard rate is payable on the Buyers Premium by all Buyers, unless otherwise stated.
