Here we have for sale a very early Land Rover® 90, finished in Stornoway Grey colour scheme with Black Canvas & Modular Wheels and Tyres.
Many are not aware that for the first 6-9 months of Land Rover® 90 production, due to the diesel engines not being fully ready for sale, a ported out version of the Series 2. 25 petrol engine was fitted to them, with a larger Weber Carburettor – these are, in our opinion, a far superior set up to the early diesel variants – being quieter, just as powerful, just as economical, and much smoother. When one considers this vehicle is just 16 months from being 40 years old, and thus qualifying for MOT & Tax Exemption, whilst having a five speed gearbox and coil springs instead of leafs, these 90s start to look like a really attractive option – something that could be used far more frequently than its older counterparts, with a far superior ride and drive to them, whilst still benefitting from low-cost motoring and low hassle ownership.
Externally, this 90 has lots of desirable features – with recent black canvas, modular wheels and tyres finished in black, defender style mirrors for improved visibility and rear swingaway wheel carrier, with matching spare under a John Brown 4×4 wheel cover. We think it looks great – a perfect mix of modern, whilst retaining the classic features.
On the inside, there are three front seats in the high back style in techno trim, with a proper, 90 middle seat too – affording seating for 3 adults if required. Deluxe matting is fitted to the footwells, and door cards are fitted to the front doors, which are often missing at this age or broken, so this is good to see. There is a seat belt bar, in order to conform to modern MOT standards, which affords the outer two seats with over the shoulder inertia reel seat belts – this is great as it is just like any modern car, and much safer too- one click and you are good to go. The rear is unfitted but could house bench seats on request for £595 in the Black Vinyl trim, affording seating for six occupants including the driver.
Out on the road is where this 90 really shines though – early 90s are usually limited by their diesel engines, which were not anywhere near as refined as their later more modern counterparts – often without turbos, and even the fittest engines do not have much go past 55mph (and can just about do dual carriageways at a push!). They’re also quite noisy, and reluctant to start in the coldest weather – when they are most required! The petrol nature of this one removes these drawbacks entirely – a 5 speed box means you can exploit the extra power of the 2495cc ported out unit, happily keeping along with modern flow, whilst the quiet tick over is a joy when doing urban driving. Coil springs mean a much superior ride over the Series 3 of the same year, which is the most welcome addition. The other big plus point of these 90s is that they are before the days of OBD and ECU control units, meaning they are simple to work on, easier to diagnose, and simpler (and cheaper) to fix. It is great to see a decent-size history file exists with this truck, including old MOTs and receipts.
In summary, if you are looking for a vehicle which is more modern and refined than the Series, but also which will soon benefit from the same MOT and Tax Exemption (as well as Classic Insurance) then this is well worth considering. This 90 still affords the owner the Series experience of wind-in-the-hair motoring, but also the flexibility to use it in far more scenarios, whilst having a vehicle which is both rare and desirable too.
