This remarkably original Ford Zephyr MKII Convertible has a fabulous low mileage of just 46, 000. 242 BOM was first registered on the 23rd June 1960 and finished in a special order colour combination of Red over Cream with special order electric clock. Correspondence with the car confirms special orders were not possible on the saloon models at Dagenham as it would upset mass production arrangements, but as 2% of total production were convertibles built at open top specialists Carbodies of Coventry, special orders were possible making this an incredibly rare car.
242 BOM was supplied new by Bristol Street Motors in Birmingham to a Mrs Marshall. The Zephyr still retains its original brown ‘buff' logbook which confirms the car stayed with the Marshall family until 1972. From 1972 to 1975 the Ford was in Worcestershire, and 1975 to 1988 in Stoke on Trent. MOT records show steady annual use from 1979 to 1988 taking the mileage to 35, 500 miles. In 1988 when it changed hands, it still had its original supplied Bristol Street Motors dealer plates fitted, and the ‘new' owner at the time had various written correspondence with the supplying dealership. This owner kept the car for four years, and from 1992 to 2021 the Ford Six was with one owner in Woking, Surrey covering low annual mileage taking the total from new to around 45, 000.
In 2021 the Zephyr sold to the most recent owner, one of our long term customers on the North Yorks Moors. On purchase he commissioned over £3000 work on the car to include full servicing, new tyres, various new rubbers and a re-commissioning program to ensure everything worked correctly. A detailed log of the intricate work is on file showing great detail and photos. Particular comments were made to the strong original condition of the metal work and cavities were found covered in oil for protection. In the two years of ownership the Zephyr has had gentle use and was driven to us faultlessly from the Whitby area, across the moors and down the A64 to us.
This really is a true time warp, the car is remarkably correct and original, the mileage fabulous and the original bodywork structurally excellent. The upholstery is largely original with patina, the power hood works correctly and the Zephyr drives incredibly well with a lovely strong six cylinder engine and smooth shifting gears. 242 BOM is as honest, and original Zephyr Convertible you could expect to find, it's a remarkable survivor and if good quality maintenance continues, this car will never require restoration.
