AN EVOCATION OF THE FAMOUS CAR THAT WAS PART OF THE INFAMOUS 'GRANNY TAKES A TRIP' BOUTIQUE IN THE 1960s KINGS ROAD!
This prop was built by the same company responsible for the great sets seen at the Goodwood Revival. Constructed as a internal display-set piece for the company's showrooms, it is only up for sale due to a move of premises.
BACKGROUND:
Granny Takes a Trip was a boutique opened in February 1966 at 488 Kings Road, Chelsea, London by Nigel Waymouth, his girlfriend Sheila Cohen and John Pearse.
The shop, which was acquired by Freddie Hornick in 1969, remained open until the mid-1970s and has been called the "first psychedelic boutique in Groovy London of the 1960s".
It was also the name of a Purple Gang song of the 1960s, which was named after the store and banned by the BBC.
The name has been appropriated by clothing stores around the world that are not connected with the original Granny Takes a Trip, including present-day vintage fashion stores in Hermosa Beach California, Sunset Boulevard and Sydney, Australia.
CONSTRUCTION:
Moulded in high quality fibreglass, the mould was taken from a famous Hot Rod. It is the front half of the car only and will need a wall to stand against. Front wheels are dressed as period and are fitted to an axle.
The car was then painted and distressed by our scenic artist team appropriately to evoke the ravages of an external exhibit exposed to the elements of London life - including those pesky pigeons!
