Here we have for sale a 1964 Land Rover® Series 2a, presented in Truck Cab format and in the popular Light Pastel Green colour scheme, with Limestone Wheels. This particular vehicle has been rebuilt in recent times and comes with a wealth of supporting paperwork for the rebuild – such as a replacement engine from Turner Engineering including unleaded head (this invoice alone totals well over £2500) – as well as many invoices for parts and labour for steering components, suspension, electrics, etc.
Externally, this has all the features one would hope to see – wing top mounted mirrors, vintage number plates, bonnet mounted spare, diff and steering guard for off-road protection, front lifting eyes, free wheeling hubs, rear grab handles, rear mud flaps and a tow bar, to name a few. The bodywork is a spray finish which is great to see, done to a good standard as the photos show. It even comes with a spare set of keys, which is very rare to see. Aluminium door tops have been fitted, which mean these will not suffer the same corrosion issues of the cheaper, mild steel ones when years down the line.
To the front of the interior, there are three standard front seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells. There is a Clayton round heater in the footwell to warm the cabin, with a 12v socket to charge phones/ sat nav systems. Lots of nice original period features are present such as the “Banjo” steering wheel, the indicators on a stalk fitted to the column, starter button, lift to open vents, sun visors etc. We always like having a truck cab in stock – they’re enormously useful, being versatile for carrying larger items, or things one may not want to share the cabin with… they also can have a canvas on the rear area if so desired, and with the sliding rear windows (and maybe even some bench seats @ £595 fitted), this can become a vehicle for the whole family too. When one adds in that these are more secure, as the front fully locks, they are easier to heat due to the smaller interior space and they also quieter too, these become an attractive vehicle for the flexibility they afford to most scenarios. With the exception of a load mat, the rear is not fitted, apart from some tailgate chains.
Out on the road is where this Series 2a really shines though – passing the modern, more stringent MOT with no advisories in a 58 year old vehicle is a serious feat – and it is evident when driving that it has been rebuilt to a good standard. The SU carb conversion affords more power over standard, whilst the free wheeling hubs give the maximum fuel economy. Road biased tyres are fitted for better on-road performance, and these are the correct, original size, which aids acceleration and gives lighter steering too. Parabolic springs mean a superior ride over standard, whilst a heater keeps you warm no matter the weather outside – and will be most welcome for the winter. Coupling all this to the raft of paperwork which even shows a replacement Turner Engineering 2286cc petrol engine, and this gives you an understanding of the rebuilding process, which has been done regardless of cost. It drives as well as these can in the period set up…. and delivers one of the best drives we can remember having for a long time – a very strong compliment indeed!
In summary, if you are looking for a restored Series 2a Land Rover® with superb provenance, including a large history of receipts and MOTs, then this could be for you. With MOT & Tax Exemption, classic insurances and the upgrades over standard – this is a serious contender for anyone looking for a Land Rover® they can depend on for just about any task – be it heading out with the kids, going to the garden centre, runs to the tip, walking the dog, or heading to the beach with a picnic basket, or taking the mountain bikes to the woods to blaze a trail.
