Description

1929 AUSTIN 7 G. E. BROOKLANDS S-SPORTS
BF 9561

A beautiful re-creation of the Gordon England, Brooklands, Super sports model.

Gordon-England, was the first to suggest, to Sir Herbert Austin, that Austin might consider a small racing car, to enhance the publicity, of the already popular Austin 7. He suggested a model that was light and streamlined and of course designed and built by Gordon England, for Austin. Supplied with chassis from Austin and mechanically prepared by the works, Gordon England went on, to famously win, the J. C. C 200-mile race at Brooklands in 1923, where the sleek Austin, beat the assembled competition.

Once the excitement was over, there was much demand for copies, of the beautiful car and so, Gordon England, started production of the ?Brooklands Super Sports? marketed by Austin and their agents, around 150-200 of this model, were built, sadly no original cars, are known to have survived, but arch enthusiast and Gordon England expert, Tom Abernethy, has built several exceedingly accurate replicas, of which the car offered, is but one.

With an amazing eye for detail and proportion, Tom has built BF 9561, in exacting form, the frame work beautifully built and then covered in fabric, as were, the majority of cars built in period, correct instruments and delightful detail abound, the staggered seats, being trimmed in black leather, add a touch of comfort to what is a very sparce but purposeful cockpit, it is certainly a racing car!
The chassis is as new, and has been completely restored, rebuilt 19inch wheels with Blockley tyres, close ratio gearbox, lowered front axle and flat springs all around, the engine was re-built by renowned Austin Seven expert Ruairidh Dunford and features a Phoenix crank and rods, correct updraught bronze solex carburettor and the car runs beautifully, quick and nimble and as gorgeous to look at as it is to drive, indeed as Bill Boddy said a ?Beautifully proportioned car? and its hard to differ from his opinion!
Ideally suited to fast road use, racing or hillclimbs, this is a great alternative to the ubiquitous Ulster and arguably much better looking! a great buy, at a fraction of the cost of a Salmson or an Amilcar, cars, the original Gordon England?s beat in period??
