Early, UK-supplied RHD ‘Big Healey’.
This 1954 Austin Healey 100/ 4 is ready to enjoy; on the road, at shows and meets, and with eligibility to compete in historic events.
Accompanied by a detailed and interesting history, this Healey benefits from a lifetime of well-documented investment, plus recent general maintenance and an additional refresh of the bodywork, paintwork and interior.
Matching numbers (chassis/ body/ engine) in accordance with information provided by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate. The gearbox is also believed to be the original.
Built and registered in April 1954, and therefore, leaving the factory with lightweight aluminium bonnet and rear boot lid (before steel replaced those parts later in the year). Delivered by London dealers, Car Mart Ltd.
Very early paperwork is unavailable, but investigations by a previous owner suggest it changed hands in 1965, and again in 1975.
Quoting the next owner, who bought the Healey in December 1988, it was purchased in ‘near-perfect mechanical condition’, the previous owner having apparently ‘performed miracles in elevating a tired Healey to nut-and-bolt perfection.’ In addition to a top end engine build, the suspension, steering and brakes were all restored, but not the gearbox or axle.
In the years following, the car was the subject of a detailed and methodical restoration, with work carried out by the owner and classic car restorer, Simon Gibson (Derbyshire), with an interior retrim by AH and Aston Martin specialist, D J Grove Ltd. The accompanying history folder contains details of the hundreds of parts purchased for the restoration, along with a photo album documenting the build. It was during this restoration that the Healey gained an alloy rocker cover, changed colour from red to black, with black wire wheels, and a Magnolia leather interior replacing the original black. It was featured, mid-build, in the July 1991 issue of Sportscar & Classic magazine.
The Healey was enjoyed extensively following the restoration, including a tour across Scandinavia. Regular maintenance continued, including a gearbox rebuild.
Following a couple of years in storage, the 100 found a new home in 1996, with a similar-minded enthusiast who, once again, continued its care and preservation for the next 17 years. It was sold at auction by Bonhams in 2012, and by Brightwells in 2016. In between those dates, the interior was retrimmed by Aston Martin specialist, Lincoln Scott, with the process recorded photographically.
The current owner took charge in October 2022, immediately investing in further conservation, upgrades and changes. The result is an understated, individual classic, well prepared for a future of fresh adventures.
Selling on behalf of its current owner, available to view at the Williams Crawford showroom.
