Launched in 1962, the MGB was a more practical and modern car than the MGA that it replaced and featured monocoque construction and carried over the B-Series engine that had been used in its predecessor – albeit having been enlarged from 1622cc to 1798cc.

The new model was originally offered in roadster form only, but the Pininfarina-designed MGB GT coupé was added to the range in late 1965 and various updates were applied during the car’s 18-year production run. A Mark II model arrived in 1967 with an all-synchromesh gearbox, then the British Leyland era ushered in plastic seats instead of leather, Rostyle wheels and a revised grille.

Safety legislation led to the adoption in 1974 of the distinctive ‘rubber bumpers’, and in late 1979 it was announced that MGB production would end the following year.

Not only was the MGB a successful road car, it also had an impressive competition career that included class victory in both the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Monte Carlo Rally. A works-entered car driven by Julian Vernaeve and Andrew Hedges won the 1966 Marathon de la Route, while further class wins were scored at the Targa Florio and the Spa 1000Km.

First registered on 13 January 1970, the MGB roadster being offered for sale was restored during the late 1990s by its long-term owner. The work included replacing a number of body panels, fitting Sebring valances and respraying the car in British Racing Green. It was then offered for sale in 2006 with an ‘original Works hardtop’, a Motobuild fast-road engine and overdrive gearbox.

Having passed to a new owner, the MGB was resprayed again in 2018 and the engine was rebuilt by Baskerville Classic and Specialist Cars in Devon. A new exhaust was fitted at the same time, and a dyno readout from 2020 shows that the 1800cc four-cylinder engine was producing 90bhp at the wheels.

More recently, the car’s latest owner has carried out an extensive amount of work that has included the installation of a rollcage, a new Borg and Beck clutch, a carburettor tune-up and the creation of a custom alloy dash console with auxiliary fusebox, extra switches and a voltmeter. A plinth for the Brantz International 2S Tripmeter was also fabricated, a fire extinguisher and rally clock were installed, and a spare wheel tie-down strap was fitted.

A Revotec cooling kit and Gaz telescopic rear shock absorbers were also specified, and this MGB took part in the 2022 Picos 1000 rally in northern Spain. It is supplied with a huge number of invoices and receipts documenting the work has been carried out in order to create this well-sorted, usable and versatile historic rally car.

The MGB has deservedly become one of the most popular classic cars ever built and benefits from a vast network of specialists and clubs. More than 500, 000 left the Abingdon factory and it continues to attract a strong following thanks to its blend of attractive styling and proven engineering.
