The R129 SL is arguably the perfect modern classic, hailing from the era where Mercedes-Benz engineered without an eye on accounting, with many citing it as the last true Mercedes-Benz. This example is a 300 24, with its 24-valve engine giving it a useful 50hp boost in power – for an overall 228hp – over its predecessor 300 SL. It also benefits from a five-speed automatic transmission and a specification that includes heated seats, air conditioning, cruise control, which means modern comforts and convenience, making this a classic you really could use every day if you desired.

Enjoying it over 34 years, but doing so sympathetically, this car has only been used in fine weather, has always been garaged and, importantly, has been maintained religiously to the service schedule. That care is obvious when looking at the car, its condition such that if you knocked a zero off the odometer we’d struggle to question it.

There’s a pleasingly fully stamped service book in the original leather pouch, that accompanied by a sheaf of paperwork that’s over an inch (3cm+ if you’re metric) thick outlining its meticulous care. Among that you’ll find pervious MOTs, all sorts of receipts for general maintenance and pleasing details like new windows in the blue fabric folding roof (the hardtop is also supplied, with a floor stand and roof-mounted pulley lifting system for easy removal), as well as an updated stereo system which adds DAB/ DAB+ radio, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto connection.
