The W124 is widely acknowledged as the last “proper” Mercedes Benz before the management accountants took over the company and quality was sacrificed. The CE is legendary, offering a great combination for the driver looking for a truly practical classic that is cosy in the winter and a pillarless, windows-down, sports coupe for the summer. There are lots of Mercedes’ out there to choose from but very few outstanding examples. Most have gone through multiple owners and covered intergalactic mileages where maintenance has been skimped and care and attention has been in short supply.

This 230CE has covered a modest 75, 000 miles and has had 7 keepers since registration in 1992. The car starts immediately with perfect oil pressure and a near silent tick over. The automatic gearbox offers both sport and economy options with a seamless gear change and responsive kickdown. On the road the CE is a pleasure to drive with ample performance, precise steering and a firm suspension that soaks up bumps while allowing spirited driving.

The Silver metallic paintwork is very original, and the chrome radiator grill and alloy wheels present extremely well.

The leather interior is in fantastic condition for its age, including the driver’s seat bolster. The ‘Butler’ seat belt mechanism that automatically presents the driver and passenger with their seat belt works perfectly, while the rear headrests drop when reverse is selected - a nice touch. The carpets have been protected with Mercedes over mats since new and the veneer on the centre console is perfect.

The engine bay does not disappoint and is to the same standard as the rest of the car. It is clean with no evidence of oil or water leaks and the under-bonnet soundproofing has been replaced. The boot area / interior matting is also outstanding and, rather nicely, retains the original spare wheel.

This CE comes with a good service history, comprising of 13 stamps in the service book plus invoices. Perfect as an everyday driver or a high days and holidays classic cruiser.
