Luxury GT or sports car? The fact is the 840 Ci did both exceptionally well especially when blended with the Sport pack. The car truly was an awesome all-rounder. A stunning long distance GT car that still gave the enthusiast owner an exciting sporty drive. Very clever really and I don’t think any of us realised just how good it was when launched. We were all guilty of living in the shadow of the 6 series especially the M635. It was also great to see a pillarless coupe again from BMW, something the 6 series sadly missed.

BMW wanted to reach out to an entirely new customer base with the E31. A new level of luxury and driver comfort in a sporty GT was aimed at the truly high-end luxury market. The 8 was BMWs flagship for a decade. Of all the E31 models the 840 had to be the best all-rounder of the bunch. The compact V8 enhanced the driver experience further.
This example is the later 4. 4 litre version which gave increased torque and improved fuel economy. Launched in January 1995, only 3075 cars were produced. Packing 286 bhp and 420 Nm of torque. This luxurious GT was propelled to 60 mph in just 7 seconds with the ZF 5 speed automatic gearbox.

Purchased new in 1999 by an advertising agent. He covered 11, 000 miles in 6 months when he decided to sell the car back to BMW. The 2nd owner was standing in L&C BMW having his 740 serviced when he saw a silver 840 CI Sport in the showroom. He happened to mention to the salesman that he would love a new 840CI Sport in green but the salesman explained that no more were available but he would see what he could do. After a couple of weeks, he received a phone call from the salesman at L&C BMW explaining that he had found a perfect 6-month-old example in Fern Green. The deal was done and the car passed to her second owner.

The second owner contacted us in August 2018. He decided due to old age it was now time for his very loved 840 CI to find a new home after nearly 20 years of ownership. Whilst in his possession the car had wanted for nothing having lived in his heated garage during that time and never having been used during the salty winter months as the owner spent the winters in South Africa. It took little time for the third lucky owner to be united with this very special car. It was purchased by a great friend of Classic Heroes and added to his utterly stunning car collection. This 840 CI Sport was in great company alongside his DB7, AC Cobra, Alpina B10 V8s and E46 M3 to name just a few. The first job was to find an original set of 18” Alpina wheels for the car as this is the look and stance he had fallen in love with years before. Although now extremely rare and very expensive, it did not take long to source a set. The car is offered for sale today on those exquisite Alpina wheels.

Now having covered only 44, 000 miles, it is now time Classic Heroes find the next owner for this beautiful example. The car is presented with all the original tools, manuals, service book, service wallet, original radio and spare keys. Supporting this is an amazing document file containing every single invoice from only 6 months old including the sales invoice to the 2nd owner from L&C.

We have been responsible for the care of this 840 CI for the last 6 years and during that time the car has wanted for nothing. Not just correct routine maintenance carried out but also thorough future proofing. The 100% original body shell was carefully cleaned and the protected with clear cavity wax. Mechanically the car has benefitted from an Inspection II service, new bonnet catch, new front and rear brake pads, new front track control arms, new tyres, new bumper rubber, new wheel arch liners, new rear lower suspension swivels, gearbox oil and filter change, new screen, new vent pipe, new cam cover gaskets and four wheel alignment. Less than 1, 000 miles have been covered during this period.

Prior to handover to the new owner, the car will pass through the workshop for Inspection I service, new coolant, new brake fluid, new MOT and PDI.
