This striking Zagato-bodied Lancia Flaminia Sport features the Milanese styling house's renowned 'double bubble' body form in which low overall lines and a rounded streamlined shape are achieved by the simple but ingenious device of convex head-clearance roof bulges above each front seat.

One of the oldest and most respected of automotive design firms, Zagato was quick to exploit the popularity of the new GT racing category after WW2, supplying factory teams and catering for the privateer scene with roadable cars that could be driven competitively on the racetrack come the weekend. The creator of some of the most memorable designs of this, arguably Zagato's most productive period, was Ercole Spada, whose creations on Lancia chassis included the Zagato Sport/ Super Sport variants of the Flavia, Fulvia and Flaminia.

Introduced at the 1956 Turin Motor Show, Lancia's top-of-the-range Flaminia retained the concept of its Aurelia predecessor's mechanical layout, though Lancia's traditional 'sliding pillar' independent front suspension gave way to a more-modern double wishbone arrangement. Aurelia carry-overs were the 60-degree, 2, 458cc, overhead-valve, V6 engine, and the four-speed De Dion rear transaxle with inboard brakes. The Zagato-bodied Sport and Super Sport models shared a shortened wheelbase with the Touring-styled GT/ GTL coupés and the Convertible, and all featured disc brakes and increased power. Introduced in 1961, the 3C variant featured triple Weber 35DCN carburettors in place of the single Solex, which raised maximum power to 140bhp. A 2, 775cc engine was introduced in 1962, by which time the sportier Flaminias were capable of around 200km/ h (130mph).

Featuring the Milanese carrozzeria's signature 'double bubble' roof, this example of the last word in old-school Lancia design comes with a Lancia Classiche Certificate of Origin recording that it left the factory finished in Bianco Saratoga (Saratoga White) with original black leather interior and confirming that it retains its original engine. The Flaminia was delivered new to Belgium via Garage Mannès and sold to its first owner, a Mr Chaudoir, on 1st June 1964. The Lancia then had one owner since 1977 in the Netherlands followed by two in Austria before being sold to Germany in 1985. Since then, it has had two owners, passing to the current vendor in 2017.

According to a letter from previous owner Mr End, the engine was rebuilt in Italy in 1993, while in 1998 the body was restored (see photographs on file). The transmission and brakes were rebuilt in 2015 according to an Ulrike Stanek-Steininger invoice on file, while in 2017 the car received new tyres and the fuel tank, carburettors, ignition system, etc. were all overhauled (see Loewer Mat invoice). In 2024 the bonnet and front of the car received extensive attention from Auto Vintage Restauration (invoice available).

The car comes with spare wheel, jack, tool kit, key ring and an instruction manual, while accompanying paperwork includes a German registration document; Lancia Classiche Certificate of Origin; old Austrian and Dutch registration documents; bills for major services in 2022 and 2024 totalling CHF15, 000; a Belgian registration document; and a large file of photocopies tracing the history of the owners and maintenance.
