Here we have for sale a rare opportunity to purchase an early, matching numbers Series 2 Land Rover®, with evidence of lots of money spent recently. These early Series 2s have a few features which are not seen on the later variants, and they are all present here – the twist to open “Shalack” vents instead of the lift to open, the banjo steering wheel and the horn on a stalk to the right of the driver, alongside a column mounted indicator stalk, to name just a few. We bought this vehicle from an enthusiast based in Cornwall, who purchased it from an estate who had previously not registered the car…. so he is the only former keeper since first registration in 2017! He also went to great lengths to secure correct provenance – including going directly to the Series 2 Land Rover® Club and vehicle registration officer Mr Richard Myres, who inspected the car and found it to be matching numbers, which is now very rare indeed to see (letter provided in the paperwork). He even insisted on a 1958 registration to match the exact date of build, rather than just a generic later “dead” dateless registration.
When we purchased this car, the previous keeper, as a goodwill gesture to us, sent the vehicle to a local classic car specialist in Dorset for service and to carry out any works required… which gives a new owner an idea of the sort of man he was! This bill came to nearly £1400, and many works were carried out including a new brake master cylinder, new brake wheel cylinders and brake pipes, refreshed fuel lines and new filter, new ignition parts such as HT leads, new spark plugs, a full service and new distributor internals, along with a new voltage regulator and a reconditioned dynamo too…. meaning that our inspection was very trouble free on this truck – much of the work had already been done for us, to a very high standard indeed. This means that this Series 2 is ready for immediate delivery and enjoyment too.
Externally, it has all the hallmarks one would hope to see in a Series 2 – with a matching bonnet mounted spare, recent bumper, new lights and lenses, wing top mounted mirrors, vintage dateless registration on black and white plates, rear grab handles, etc. A recent bumper and canvas completes the look well. A set of road biased cross-climate tyres are fitted for the best compromise between off and on road abilities too. We think the photos speak for themselves and it is a really handsome Series – and we’d hope a new owner would agree.
On the inside, there are three front standard seats, along with the deluxe matting in the footwells, and twin benches to the rear – meaning seating for seven people including the driver. The rear has been trimmed in deluxe soundproofing & matting, for that premium feel, to protect against scratches and insulate the cabin from road noise where possible. Those eagle eyed readers will notice the early features in the front that were discussed above – and a heater completes the interior, which is always an added bonus for colder days.
Out on the road, this Series 2 delivers a pleasing period drive, with the added bonus of road biased larger tyres giving a better cruising experience. A new exhaust and exhaust manifold means she makes a lovely, raspy sound from the exhaust too. It goes well and thanks to the recent service and works to the brakes, it stops well too. The vintage period look means many glances and waves whilst driving through town, too.
In summary, if you are looking for an early Series 2 which can carry the whole family, benefits from MOT & Tax Exemption along with classic insurance and you absolutely must have one as verified matching numbers with the provenance to prove it, then this could be for you. It is rare we get to see such examples, and a real joy when we get the opportunity to sell them.
