The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Type 140 Phase 3 was launched in 1996. Phase 1 of the Type 140 coupé was launched in 1992 with the name "SEC". It was then renamed in 1994 with the term "S-Class Coupé", which was Phase 2. The Mercedes-Benz C140 was the coupé version of the W140 and V140 saloons, and saw the introduction of V12 engines, as well as numerous safety features such as airbags as standard, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Parktronic sonar-assisted parking. The Type 140 also marked a technological leap for Mercedes-Benz, in particular with the networking of ECUs via the CAN (Controller Area Network) data bus. Production of the Type 140 was discontinued in September 1998 and replaced by the CL-Class Type 215.
