Styled by Cliff Wilkins, the third generation Dodge Ram debuted at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. A ‘clean sheet’ design featuring all-new frames, suspension, powertrains, interiors, and bodywork, it could be had in 1500, 2500 and 3500 guises. Lighter and shorter than its siblings, the former also had the most car-like road manners courtesy of its independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering. Benefiting from permanent four-wheel drive, the 1500 was available with a choice of V6 and V8 engines allied to manual or automatic transmission. Uprated with AAM axles for the 2003 model year, the third generation trucks were facelifted three years later.
A comparatively late third generation example, chassis 1D7HA16K88J215717 is unusual in that it was specified with the 3. 7 litre V6 engine and six-speed manual transmission. Indeed, the seller thinks it could possibly be unique in the UK. Arriving on these shores four years ago, the Dodge was allocated the appropriate number plate ‘NY57 WWE’ (NY and WWE having strong American connotations). Retained by a British 4x4 specialist for his own use, the Ram 1500 SXT has since formed part of a small private collection. Considerably more fuel efficient than one of its V8 powered, automatic siblings, the left-hand drive Pick-Up’s annual road fund licence is understood to cost £345. Finished in Red Metallic with Grey cloth upholstery, ‘NY57 WWE’ boasts such niceties as air-conditioning, electric windows and cruise control. Passing its last MOT test with ‘no advisories’, the vendor informs us that the Dodge is ‘a tidy thing with no obvious rust anywhere and as clean underneath as on top with original paint work’. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, owner’s manual, detachable tow bar and sundry paperwork.
