This beautiful, 1 of 78, UK RHD, W112, is a fantastic example, with only 42, 840 miles. The car was favored for its M189 engine, luxurious quality, cushioning air suspension, and droptop looks in one package. The car has been very well maintained, ready for its new owner to enjoy, roof up or roof down.
Favoured by celebrities and industrialists, the W112, developed on W111, was designed to be the brand's flagship and featured a race-bred straight 6 engine derived from the 300SL. In drop top form, the Paul Bracq design really brought the car into its own. With only 708 ultimately made, the car has since become valued by collectors for its looks, status and rarity.
This 300SE was manufactured in December 1964 and supplied to the UK in January 1965. Little is known about the car pre September 2004 when the car was imported into the UK from the US. In 2006/ 2007, the car underwent a full bare-metal respray, new engine, retrimmed dark red leather interior and hood to match factory specifications. In 2012 more work was undertaken on the exhaust system, fuel system, steering, brakes, and electronics. From then the vehicle was maintained by Steve Redfearn, one of the best classic Mercedes-Benz specialists.
In 2023-2024, we carried out a full overhaul of the suspension system, addressing various engine, braking, steering, and other mechanical issues. From there, we dry ice cleaned the underside and re-protected it. The bumpers were also re-chromed and exterior paintwork corrected. The car received a new engine in 2006 to the same (M189) specification and is non matching numbers.
The overall condition of the car is great, the paintwork features few stone chips, some marks on the wheel caps showing good signs of use. The interior is in great condition with only a few signs of the leather creasing. The car is in great usable condition, having receently had the roof replaced to match the interior. The engine bay has also been kept in serviceable condition.
The car makes an elegant, refined drop top cruiser. The famed air suspension is soft and refined, yet controlled. Hood up or hood down, the car doesn't disappoint and is a joy to drive at all speeds. The overall build quality is classic Mercedes, being overengineered. As with all cars they require regular driving and preventative maintenance particularly with the engine, fuel injection and air suspension system to ensure the car is very well maintained.
The 3 litre straight 6, M189 engine is motorsport derived. The engine was detuned and refined, producing 170 bhp and was still able to hit 121 to 124 mph. The 4-speed automatic gearbox is smooth with column mounted lever. Power is sent to the rear wheel by a limited-slip differential. The rugged chassis made for great handling, with the shock-absorbing sections for great safety standards for the time. The car’s double wishbone front suspension and single-joint swing axle rear suspension gave great road holding with the air suspension and the powerful all round disc brakes were servo assisted. The chrome-capped steel wheels are classic Mercedes-Benz and the Maxis MA-1’s front and rear are in really great condition.
The car comes with a list of paperwork, spare tyre, tool kit, car jack, 2 car covers ( indoor and outdoor), and a box of spare replaced hardware.
