THE AMG GT BLACK SERIES
Officially launched at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014, the Mercedes-AMG GT is historically significant as only the second sports car developed entirely by Affalterbach-based AMG, the first being the SLS AMG. Styled in house by a team headed by Robert Lenik, the Mercedes-AMG GT restated the traditional 'long bonnet, small cabin, short tail' sports car look in a manner suggesting muscular horsepower while retaining all the elegance associated with Mercedes-Benz. Although it used conventional doors rather than the SLS's 'Gullwing' type, the GT featured numerous styling references to its illustrious distant ancestor and was an instant hit with the public.
Boasting a chassis/ body of mainly aluminum construction, the GT is powered by a hand-built M178 V8 engine. Positioned well back in the wheelbase for better weight distribution, this might power plant produces 469bhp in the mainstream model with 515 horsepower on tap in the GT S. The transmission consists of a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox incorporated into a rear transaxle, again with ideal weight distribution in mind (Mercedes claim what it calls an optimum 47/ 53% front/ rear split). The GT was face-lifted in 2017, gaining a little more power in the process.
In recent years Mercedes-AMG has produced several limited edition 'Black Series' variants of its high-performance models, and the GT is no exception. Introduced for 2021, the pumped-up Black Series version came with all of 720 horsepower on tap courtesy of extensive changes made to the M178 engine. The suspension system is unique to the Black Series, with camber adjustable at both front and rear, and the model also came with carbon-ceramic brake discs a standard. Mostly made of carbon fiber, the body incorporates numerous aerodynamic devices, including an active aero flap in the rear wing. Claimed performance figures for the Black Series were a 0-60mph in 2. 5 seconds and a top speed of 202mph. On 4th November 2020 a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series driven by Maro Engel set a new production car lap record at the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit with a lap in 6:43. 616.
