History Unveiled in December 1966, the first 500 cars were destined for the French market. The aptly-named Europa was Colin Chapman's response to his desire to create an affordable yet revolutionary mid-engined sports car, the first road-going Lotus to feature a mid-engine and the fourth road car to benefit from such a configuration. For the record, the Matra (née Bonnet) Djet was the first in 1962, followed by the De Tomaso Vallelunga in 1964 and the Lamborghini Miura in 1966. The Lotus boss was going to call it 'Elfin', until someone explained to him that it meant 'the end' in Spanish. As this was Lotus' car for Europe, he chose Europe. The other main export market was Germany. Despite its relatively low power output, it gave the Europa great performance, helped no doubt by its light weight of 610kg. The Europa shared many components with its sister car the Elan, although most were modified for a mid-engined car. The front suspension was derived from Triumph's (much the same as a Herald or Spitfire, with stamped double wishbones and Alford and Adler uprights). Launched in April 1968, the S2 benefited from several improvements over the S1 Europa, although the chassis and Renault engine remained unchanged. It differed sufficiently from its predecessor to be given a new designation - Type 54 - and insurance companies could now breathe easier, as the bodywork was now bolted to the chassis rather than glued! Several S2s were produced with S1 running gear, presumably because Lotus had so many unused parts! The windows were now electrically operated (quite advanced for 1968) and made of laminated glass, while the seats were now conventionally styled and adjustable, although the driving position was still excellent and best described as 'racy'. The interior was entirely new, without being luxurious. Despite weighing more (710kg), the S2 wasn't exactly a juggernaut. Approximately 3, 615 examples of the S2 were built Description This LOTUS is of American origin, has been in France since 1995 and has been restored. Equipped with the RENAULT 16 TL engine with major modifications such as a twin carburettor and a reversed R16 gearbox. Weighing in at 710 kg, this little coupé is very energetic to drive and is positioned very low. The car is presented in very good condition with a very clean interior, very much inspired by TRIUMPH. The chassis is sound, the engine runs perfectly and this LOTUS is ready to drive. There's no damage to the body, the bumpers are perfectly aligned and the car is complete. Our verdict A highly innovative little sports car for its time, with the advantage of being easy to maintain at home!
