Description
History: At around the same time as Mercedes-Benz's famous 300 series, the W187 range appeared on the market with a six-cylinder engine. Parallel to the rather conservative Ponton, the 220 was intended to appeal to the well-earning class. Because it was expensive, only 17, 000 220 sedans were produced during the entire production run. However, the so-called prestige demanded an even more refined and exclusive form, which led to the introduction of the yet rarer Coupé and Cabriolet models 1278. Precisely because they are so rare, but also because they are so beautiful and easy to drive, the Coupés and Cabriolets of this model line are today coveted collectibles. The exemplar offered for sale here was restored a few years ago to a level well above its sale price and is in excellent condition. According to VIN / 52, this specimen is one of the first of 1278 produced and was first registered in Germany in 1952 before being imported to Switzerland shortly afterwards. A passionate car collector from Eastern Switzerland drove the restored specimen for decades and cared for it lovingly down to the last detail.
Bodywork and paintwork: The restoration now reveals its true quality. The entire bodywork and the paint are undamaged and have a very beautiful and authentic gloss. The panel gaps, typical for Mercedes-Benz, are excellent. The decorative mouldings are undamaged and the chrome is still like-new.
Interior: The likewise renewed genuine leather interior was fitted true to original and lined with the original carpet. The door panels were renewed and all fittings restored. Notably, the rare original Becker radio adds an extra touch to this example.
Engine and mechanics: The engine and exhaust values are excellent. Emissions are within target, and the engine runs smoothly. The gearbox, gear lever and clutch work flawlessly. Thanks to regular use of the 220A, the seals have stayed supple and hardly let any fluid through.
Chassis/ suspension: Suspension and brakes were overhauled at the last veteran inspection and are in good condition. The only thing to handle with care is the tightening of the brakes before longer trips. The chassis and underbody are fully intact. The restoration work is documented with many photos.
Driving feel: The 220 cabriolet drives smoothly and gives all occupants a sense of security. The comfort-focused suspension is pleasant for all passengers on long and short journeys.
Recommendation: The refined six-cylinder cabrios of the 187 range are rare but often to be seen at fine classic car events. For fans of the Mercedes-Benz marque and the beautiful classical lines of the 1950s, the 220A Cabriolet is one of the safer and more solid values.
