We are delighted to present for sale this early Land Rover® Series 3, which was registered in October 1972, the first year of Series 3 production. It is great to see a Series 3 in the original Deep Bronze Green colour scheme, with Limestone Wheels and Canvas come into HQ, especially rebuilt onto a Galvanised Chassis in times past.
Externally, this has all the period features one would expect to see on a “good” Series 3 Land Rover® – the recent bumper, the bonnet mounted spare, the tow bar and electrics to allow towing, rear grab handles, rear mud flaps, vintage number plates, recent canvas with side windows – etc etc. The larger wheels and tyres mean both a positive stance and increased gearing when out on the road driving. The only real notable addition is the larger defender style mirrors, both to aid visibility whilst driving and to help whilst towing, should this be required. In our opinion, we think this makes for a handsome package, and we’d hope that a new keeper would agree that it looks just as it should – a good amalgamation of modern touches with period charm.
On the inside, there are three front standard seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. Rear Bench seats have been fitted to allow seating for seven people, with a load mat to the rear floor to protect against damage. The fitment of a recent canvas with Side Windows means a light and airy feel when out on the road for everyone, as well as improving blind spot visibility for the driver – a welcome and handy addition. A side opening tailgate means loading passengers into the rear is a breeze.
Out on the road, this Series 3 benefits from both a Weber Carburettor and an overdrive – which added to the larger tyres means that you can keep with modern traffic flow without too much hassle and cabin noise. The added bonus of Parabolic Springs means a superior ride – particularly both off road and over pot holes or school speed bumps, which is most welcome. Thanks to a recent brake service, it stops as well as it goes… there is not much more one can do in the period set up to achieve a better driving Series 3 than this one! The added benefit of a galvanised chassis means corrosion concerns are curtailed.
In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 3 Land Rover® which can carry all the family, benefits from MOT and Tax Exemption (alongside Classic Insurance) and has a host of upgrades to the drivetrain to make it as usable as possible, then this could be for you. With the added benefit of a galvanised chassis rebuild in the past, then it should be a dear family friend which can be passed down as an heirloom in the future.
