The Plymouth Hemi Roadrunner
The 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner was designed to bring high-performance driving to the everyday buyer. Built on the principle of "no frills, just speed," it delivered exactly what muscle car enthusiasts wanted: big horsepower at an affordable price. At the top of the lineup was the formidable 426 Hemi V8, a street version of Chrysler's race-proven engine, making a factory-rated 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque.
With its unmistakable cartoon-inspired badging, "Beep Beep" horn, and available Air Grabber hood scoop, the Road Runner didn't take itself too seriouslybut under the hood, it was all business. The HEMI-powered variant could run the 1/ 4 mile in the low 13-second range, easily outpacing more expensive rivals.
The 1969 model year saw minor styling updates, including a new grille and taillight design, while still staying true to the Road Runner's stripped-down formula. Most interiors were basic, with bench seats and minimal trim, keeping weight and costs low. Buyers could opt for a hardtop, coupe, or convertible body style, though the vast majority were coupes.
Production of HEMI Road Runners was limited, making them highly collectible today. Fewer than 800 units were built with the HEMI engine in 1969, and far fewer survive with their original drivetrains intact.
