Imported from California, USA
Left-hand drive

Introduced in 1961, the E-Type caused a sensation when it first appeared, with instantly classic lines and a top speed of 150mph. An optimistic 265bhp was claimed, but whatever the installed horsepower the E-Type's performance did not disappoint: firstly, because it weighed considerably less than the preceding XK150 and secondly because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the racing D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.
Despite the E-Type's gorgeous appearance taller drivers could find the interior somewhat lacking in space, a criticism addressed by the introduction of foot wells early in 1962. By this time, other more minor modifications had been made, such as deleting the external bonnet locks and adopting pressed-in bonnet louvres instead of the earlier welded-in type. But of all the versions of Jaguar's long-lived and much-loved sports car, it is the very early 'Flat Floor' 3. 8-litre cars built prior to January 1962 which, for many enthusiasts, remain the most desirable.
Today, the E-Types graceful lines live on in modern Jaguar sports cars, and there can be little doubt that William Lyons' sublime creation would feature in any knowledgeable enthusiast's 'Top Ten' of the world's most beautiful cars of all time.
Manufactured on 6th November 1961, this early left-hand drive 'flat floor' E-Type roadster was imported from California, USA and has gone through a 'last-nut-and-bolt' total restoration, which included returning the car to its original colour combination of black with a red leather interior, the latter re-trimmed by Mike Turley. Importantly, this is a full matching-numbers example retaining its original body, engine and gearbox. Other notable features include front frames new by Hutsons (original with car); Coopercraft brakes all round; 61 Type radiator with upgraded fan kit; Dynator (upgraded charging system); high-torque starter; and an upgraded clock.
The car is offered with a UK V5C Registration Certificate and represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a much sought-after 'Flat Floor' E-Type presented in mint condition throughout. Prospective purchasers should note that the car has covered only 23 shake-down miles since the restoration's completion, and further snagging and careful running-in is advised before serious use.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
