Its accompanying copy chassis cards reveal that 'B329BR' was sold in March 1960 via Weybridge Autos to M L Engineering of Slough, Buckinghamshire for use by managing director E M Mobbs. The Bentley later relocated to the USA where its first known custodian was a William Mann of Clary Close, Maryland (possibly an importer/ trader) acting for Leonard Vogel of Shadow Road, Chevy Chase, Maryland (owner between 1973 and 1976). Len Vogel later transferred the car to his daughter, Diana Sheryl Vogel, who moved it to her residence in Yonkers, New York (before 1990).
In October 2012, Dee Mance (née Diana Sheryl Vogel) released the car to traders Beverly Hill Car Club. BHCC's agent in the UK was the Kent Car Collection, from whom the current owner bought the Bentley in March 2013. Unfortunately, it proved impossible to retrieve the original registration ('6065 K') and the car was issued with age-related mark, '927 UYH'.
The Bentley's original non-standard colour scheme was Ming Blue with fine grey coachlines and off white interior, that exterior colour being applied to only two S2s in 1960. The car had been repainted red by the time it was delivered to our vendor, who considered Ming Blue too dark and elected to have the Bentley repainted in Rolls-Royce Athenian Blue and the interior re-trimmed in darkish red by SM Trimming.
As delivered the car was in need of extensive restoration, which eventually was entrusted to the respected marque specialists, West Hoathly Garage in Sussex. Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances enforced a slow pace and the no-expense-spared rebuild was not completed until September 2022. WHG's restoration paperwork and bills, the latter totalling c.£150, 000, are on file (inspection essential). The car also comes with an old Maryland Certificate of Title, current MoT, and a UK V5C Registration Certificate.
Since then the owner's friends have taken the Bentley out on two test drives, returning it to storage at WHG with full marks on both occasions. Our vendor has not driven the car since the rebuild's completion as he wishes to sell it as still 'like new' rather than even slightly used.
Some 60-plus years since it left the factory, 'B329BR' may be considered a three-owner car, probably having had only one owner in the UK; a single family in the USA; and the current vendor. A rare find.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
