Description
1938 MG TA – For Sale
The MG TA succeeded the highly successful P-Type, bringing with it several key improvements. The track was widened by three inches, offering greater cabin space and comfort for occupants, while also enhancing cornering stability. Most significant, however, was the introduction of the 1, 292cc MPJG engine. This unit gave the TA genuine long-distance capability, something emphatically proven when Allan Tomlinson drove one to victory in the 1939 Australian Grand Prix.
First registered in February 1938, this car retains its original engine. Beneficial updates include the fitment of a high-torque starter motor and a new tonneau cover. Offered from a deceased estate, the history file could not be located, so while recent works cannot be confirmed, it is apparent that cosmetic improvements have been carried out in recent years.
On the road, the TA performs well, showing good oil pressure and lively performance from the 1, 292cc engine – more than capable of making the most of an A- or B-road. Hydraulic brakes provide confidence and control.
Presented in black coachwork with red seats and matching radiator slats, this MG TA carries itself with real period charm. Eligible for a wide range of VSCC events, the model has also proven itself in endurance rallying – a supercharged TA has, in fact, performed with distinction on HERO-ERA long-distance rallies.
A versatile and characterful pre-war sports car, equally at home in competition, touring, or simply enjoyed on the open road.
